Police warn of fraudulent utility workers showing fake IDs

EAST BRUNSWICK – East Brunswick police reported a scam in which a suspect claimed to be a local utility worker.

Residents at a Fresh Ponds Road home were approached by a male with a dark complexion wearing a badge around his neck around 1:49 p.m. July 14, according to information provided by the East Brunswick Police Department.

The male reportedly showed his badge and advised the residents that he worked for the city’s water department. The residents told the male that the water was working fine. The male then attempted to guide the residents into the backyard and started walking toward the back door of the home. One of the residents got between the male and the house and pushed him away, according to reports.

The male allegedly ran down the driveway toward Hardenburg Lane where a large, dark gray colored Toyota pickup truck with tinted windows stopped, picked up the male and drove off in the direction of the New Jersey Turnpike, according to reports.

Police are reminding residents that all township utility employees will be in a clearly marked township vehicle and will always present a Township of East Brunswick identification card when asked.

To verify an employee’s identity, call the East Brunswick Police Department.
