Cheers & Jeers

by Damian Holbrook

Cheers to NBC
for repping broadcast TV.
The night was mostly owned
by HBO and streaming
services, but Saturday Night
Live‘s multiple victories and
Sterling K. Brown’s win for
This Is Us were solid
reminders that the nets are
still in the game.

Cheers to Newbies
for taking home hardware.
The Handmaid’s Tale and its
Emmy-ordained twosome of
Ann Dowd and Elisabeth
Moss (from left),
Black Mirror, The Night Of‘s
Riz Ahmed and Big Little
Lies all shook up the Drama
and Limited Series races
with their big first wins.

Jeers to Play-off Music
The night hit its most sour
note when the band cut off
Sterling K. Brown and Kate
McKinnon (SNL‘s
Outstanding Supporting
Actress in a Comedy) early
into their acceptance
speeches, even though Big
Little Lies‘ Limited Series
Lead Actress champ Nicole
Kidman had all the time she
wanted. That sort of A-list
bias is total BS.

Jeers to Queen Latifah’s Miss Carlotta
for shooting Star‘s Jahil. It’s
no wonder the girls wanted
to record a song called
“Bad Bish,” given that their
ferocious mentor-turned manager
is the one who
secretly shot and killed their
old one (Benjamin Bratt) in
last season’s finale.
