Howell resident killed in highway crash

MARLBORO – A motor vehicle accident involving a 2005 Nissan Xterra sport utility vehicle resulted in the death of the driver.

Marlboro police said that at 8:32 p.m. Oct. 2, officers responded to a motor vehicle accident on Route 18 southbound. The accident occurred north of the Route 79 overpass.

Upon arrival, officers located a Nissan Xterra that had left the road, struck several trees and overturned. The driver, who was the only occupant of the SUV, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police later identified the driver as Michael W. Lyon Sr., 63, of Howell.

According to an obiturary posted by the Clayton and McGirr Funeral Home, Freehold Township, Lyon lived in Piscataway for 29 years before moving to Howell in 2013. Prior to his retirement in 2012, he worked as a facility technician for Verizon in Plainfield.

Lyon is survived by his wife of 39 years, Nancy Lyon of Howell; daughter, Nicole Kragh and her husband, Jon of Farmingdale; son, Michael Lyon Jr. and his wife, Leyna of Parlin; and granddaughters, Harper, Avery and Jillian.

The cause of the accident is under investigation by the Marlboro Police Department Traffic and Safety Bureau.

The Marlboro Fire Department, the Robertsville Volunteer Fire Company, the Marlboro First Aid Squad, the Morganville First Aid Squad, MONOC paramedics and the State Department of Transportation responded to the scene.
