HOLMDEL The Township Committee approved a resolution authorizing a change order for the library’s construction project in Bell Works.
The township awarded a contract to McCauley Construction for the construction of Holmdel Library at the Bell Works facility in the amount of $1,779,000, according to the committee agenda.
The township architect had submitted a detailed report, on Sept. 25, requesting approval of an increase to the contract in the amount of $4,086 for additional materials and labor.
The committee approved the resolution for the change order, on Oct. 10, during its semi-monthly meeting at the municipal building.
The contract is changed to include: adding a receptacle to the wall behind circulation desk, adding exit devices to door 105a and 105b, and infill and fire stop existing penetrations and holes to pass framing inspection, according to the committee agenda.
The total net changes to the contract amount is $17,435, which is 0.98 percent of the original amount of the contract making the total project cost $1,796,435, according to the committee agenda.
This construction change order will not delay the opening of the library at its newest facility in Bell Works, according to Township Administrator Donna Vieiro.
“A change order is a typical part of any contract. It allows for items that are needed to be changed/modified etc. as the project continues. It is the norm,” Vieiro said.
Construction on the library’s newest facility started on June 29, according to Vieiro.
“The township received $1 million from Somerset Development and the Holmdel Library Committee has and will continue to fund raise. The township also passed a bond ordinance to supplement these two sources of revenue,” Vieiro said.
According to Vieiro, the library opening is anticipated in early November.
Mayor Gregory Buontempo announced that resident Kin Gee was this year’s winner of the Mayor’s Volunteer Service Award for his ongoing involvement with the grass-root organization, Residents Against Giant Electric (RAGE).
Buontempo said Gee’s concern began when JCP&L publicly announced its plans to install new high power voltage power lines through several Monmouth County towns, including Holmdel.
“Gee has spent thousands of hours over the past year and a half, including going door-to-door to educate Holmdel residents about JCP&L’s plans, organizing letter writing drives urging elected officials to listen to residents and oppose the plan, coordinating and spending hours manning RAGE efforts at Holmdel community events,” Buontempo said.
According to Buontempo, Gee became part of RAGE’s volunteer legal team reviewing thousands of pages of documents and attending every single day of court hearings in Newark to assist RAGE’s attorney and to reinforce RAGE’s commitment against the new power lines.
After reading his resolution of appreciation, Buontempo presented Gee with two plaques. Buontempo said that one plaque is going to be hung up in town hall.
