Sayreville receives grant to improve recreational facilities

SAYREVILLE – The Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders presented the Borough of Sayreville with a $1.5 million recreational grant to improve Veterans Park and the Sayreville Recreation Complex.

The funds, from the county’s Open Space and Recreation Trust Fund, will go toward a new turf field, sports lighting, an expanded parking area and a recreation building that includes a comfort station and concession stand at Veterans Park; and a new turf field that can accommodate either a single, full-size tournament field for older youth or two junior fields for younger groups, and an elevated aluminum bleachers for spectators and bench/coach areas for players at the recreation complex.

“This is a joint project between the county and Sayreville which will contribute the remaining funds toward the $3.6 million project,” Freeholder Director Ronald G. Rios said during the freeholders’ Nov. 2 meeting, according to a prepared statement. “Great things happen when the county and our towns work together, and creating first-rate recreational facilities for our youth is one of the best ways to serve our residents.”
