The Christmas Candlelight House Tour returns to Hightstown this year, featuring five private homes featuring decorations chosen by the homeowners, from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 10.
The tour, sponsored by the Hightstown Woman’s Club, begins at the Ely House, 164 North Main Street, which is also the headquarters of the Hightstown-East Windsor Historical Society.
Among the homes on the tour is a grand old Queen Anne style home, circa 1890, which has a large wrap-around front porch and is beautifully decorated. This home is one of the Stockton Street Historic District’s largest and most imposing late nineteenth century dwellings.
Another home on South Main Street is a Victorian Christmas extravaganza. The homeowner, an artist by trade, shows off his talent through some of his carved pieces, particularly the hand-carved wood Santa and Nativity scene that are on display in the living room. There are more whimsical wooden carvings including two Santas, an elf, and snowman in the family room. There is a Victorian themed Christmas tree with old whimsical ornaments and lots of gold ribbon.
Prior to the tour, the Historical Society is hosting its annual Christmas tea and holiday boutique from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Rocky Brook Garden Club members will be selling fresh centerpieces at the boutique, located in the freight station. There will also be cider and homemade cookies inside the Ely House.
Both the tea and homes tour are open to the public. However, while the Christmas tea is free, the house tour costs $15 per adult and $5 per child with all funds raised slated for the society and charity.
Tickets will be available at Ely House after 1:30 p.m. Dec. 10. For more information call 609-448-8388 or www.hewhs.com.
