Crossroads students use 3D printer for championship project

SOUTH BRUNSWICK – A little help from the library went a long way for three middle school students in South Brunswick.

With the use of the 3D printer at the South Brunswick Library, three students from Crossroads South Middle School created a model for a project that is taking them all the way to a world championship.

“Well, that model helped us win the qualifying and regional championships, and now we are going to the World Championship in Detroit, Michigan,” Amogh Joshi of the Princeton Unimaters Team said in a statement provided by the library. “The model we made was a key factor for our win.”

The Princeton Unimaters is a FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) LEGO League (FLL) team: seventh grader Amogh and eighth graders Saumit Kale and Jay Nadkarni. The team coaches are Nilesh Joshi and Anil Kale.

The students needed to make a model demonstrating their solution to the Hydrodynamics Challenge. It is referred to as a “greywater” project – problem-solving to demonstrate how to use recycled water for things such as flushing toilets, according to the statement.

“I 3D-printed the designs that they sent to me,” Librarian Randall Marsola in the statement.  “They had a few designs to print that they needed for the competition. They were able to get the designs printed right here in the library and pick them up after school, so everything was done in the community.”

“It was a pleasure working with these students to get their designs printed with [the library’s] Makerbot 3D printer for their competition in the FIRST LEGO League. We congratulate them on qualifying for the regional championship and wish them the best of luck in the World Championship in Detroit,” Marsola said.

The team will represent Northern Jersey and compete with teams from around the world at the World Festival in April.
