North Brunswick police officer injured during foot chase after armed robbery attempt

NORTH BRUNSWICK – A North Brunswick police officer was treated for injuries and released after an altercation with a suspect during an alleged armed robbery.

At approximately 8:52 p.m. on Jan. 31, officers were alerted to a possible robbery in progress at a business at 689 Georges Road. A sergeant and a patrol unit were already in the area and interrupted an alleged armed robbery attempt, according to information provided by the North Brunswick Police Department.

Multiple suspects fled the scene both on foot and by vehicle, police said. The suspect vehicle allegedly drove at officers, attempting to strike them during their escape. One officer was contacted, but not injured, police said.

A foot pursuit was initiated by officers, leading through a residential neighborhood, and then to the area of Route 1 and Silverline Drive. Officers were able to catch one of the suspects, which led to a physical struggle on the highway. The suspect was taken into custody after the brief struggle.

During the response, one officer was struck by a vehicle on the southbound lanes of Route 1 south. The officer was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where he was treated for his injuries and later released, police said.

One victim of the robbery remains in the hospital, being treated for injuries sustained at the hands of the suspects, police said. Another suspect has since been taken into custody, and detectives continue to work on collecting evidence and locating additional suspects.

During this event, another collision occurred on Route 1 from vehicles attempting to avoid this event. One driver from that collision was also transported to the hospital by North Brunswick First Aid & Rescue Squad for minor injuries, police said.

No other information is being released at this time, pending further investigation.
