Sarah Klaus Cehelyk of East Brunswick has been named a 2018 Horatio Alger National Scholar.
The scholarship is awarded to a graduating high school senior who, in addition to having a record of academic excellence, exhibits determination, perseverance, grit and integrity in overcoming personal hardships.
Sarah is one of only 106 high school students selected out of a pool of 40,000 applicants who received the award.
The induction ceremony and reception will be held at the U.S. Supreme Court and other national sites in Washington, D.C., in the spring.
In May, Sarah will graduate from Golda Och Academy in West Orange. She mentored students in lower grades and was elected to the National Honor Society in her junior year. She volunteered at the East Brunswick Jewish Center Hebrew School and at a music program for young autistic children, as well as at the Friendship Circle. She was a member of the choir, school newspaper staff and president of the Community Clothing Club at her school.
In the fall, Sarah will begin studying at Muhlenberg College in Pennsylvania.
