The artwork of East Brunswick resident Hannah Corl will be featured at a special showing at the Child Mind Institute in Manhattan.
Hannah’s submission is entitled “Portrait of a Girl in a Hat.” When asked about her inspiration for the piece, she said, “This painting means that you don’t see the truth when you just look with your eyes,” she said in a prepared statement from The Purnell School, an independent boarding and day school for girls in Pottersville, where Hannah attends as a sophomore.
The exhibit, “Finding One’s Inner Warrior,” is a mixed-media show that opened on Jan. 28. It is an exercise in self-expression, according to Donna Andeskie, dean of Students and Arts Department chair at Purnell.
“Each girl was asked to explore what it means to find her inner strength, passion and conviction. The results of the assignment are as varied as the individuals themselves with each piece of art reflecting a very different perspective that comes across through the elements inherent in the chosen media: acrylic, water color, collage and other formats,” Andeskie said in the statement.
The art show’s theme supports Purnell’s Empowerment Project, an ongoing interdisciplinary approach to providing adolescent girls with the knowledge and self-awareness to navigate today’s contemporary challenges. The theme of women’s empowerment is examined throughout the school year in many contexts beyond art, including via guest speakers, films, speeches by each senior and community service, according to the statement.
