Freehold Township hires Class II officer

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP – The Township Committee has appointed Lorenzo Valentin Felix to serve as a Class II special officer with the Freehold Township Police Department during 2018.

Committee members acted upon a recommendation from Police Chief Ernest Schriefer. Felix was hired on March 13.

Class II special officials serve on assignment in the Freehold Township K-8 School District; issue summonses to vehicles that are parked in fire zones, handicap parking spaces and no parking zones; serve on assignment in the municipal courtroom; provide traffic control in special details; work as communication operators; and complete special duties assigned by the police chief, according to a resolution.

Class II special officers are only armed while they are on duty and they are not members of the police force, according to the resolution.

In other business, committee members approved an application for a Safe Corridors Grant in the amount of $36,019 from the New Jersey Department of Transportation Highway Safety Fund to be submitted and a grant contract to be executed with the state. Officials said they were notified by the state of Freehold Township’s eligibility to receive the grant.

And, the committee authorized the Monmouth County Mosquito Control Division to conduct aerial mosquito control operations in the township. The division will apply pesticides by aircraft for mosquito control in certain areas of Freehold Township designated by the county as larval mosquito habitats or areas harboring high populations of mosquitoes constituting either a nuisance, a health hazard or both, according to a resolution.

Finally, committee members passed a resolution amending an agreement with state contract vendors. The resolution amends the original agreement with the state contract vendors by adding an estimated $100,000 contract with Marturano Recreation for park and playground equipment and an estimated $70,000 contract with Consolidated Steel and Aluminum Fence Co. for fencing.
