SAYREVILLE – Police are investigating a fatal collision on April 25 where one person was killed and four others were injured in a crash on Raritan Street in Sayreville.
The deceased driver is Carlos Leiva, 47, of Colombia, who was visiting family members in the U.S., according to a joint statement provided by Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey and Chief John Zebrowski of the Sayreville Police Department.
Leiva was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH) in New Brunswick where he was pronounced dead from his injuries.
The four passengers are family members of Leiva’s – two adults and two children – who were also taken to RWJUH for their injuries, and are in stable condition, according to reports.
The preliminary investigation determined that at 2:23 p.m. a 17-year-old Sayreville resident, who was driving a Dodge Ram pickup, allegedly drove into the oncoming lane of traffic and crashed into the Hyundai SUV Leiva was driving, officials said.
The teenager was taken to Raritan Bay Medical Center. His identity is being withheld because of his age.
At this time, no charges have been filed in the crash, according to the statement.
