South Amboy native receives high school Hall of Fame award

SOUTH AMBOY – A South Amboy native and 1995 Sayreville War Memorial High School (SWMHS) graduate received the SWMHS Hall of Fame award for 2018.

Commander Steven Tarr III, serving in the U.S. Navy for 18 years, is the commander of Los Angeles-class attack submarine USS Topeka (SSN 754), one of four Guam-homeported submarines.

“It is humbling. I never thought when I was graduating from high school I would be coming back to my hometown to receive an award,” Tarr said in a statement prepared by Lt. Lauren Spaziano, Public Affairs officer for the Navy.

Serving in the Navy has molded Tarr into a leader and continues to develop essential traits needed for success both professionally and personally, according to the statement.

“The Navy has given me the privilege and opportunity of learning from so many great sailors from across our country,” Tarr said in the statement. “Working with them on a daily basis is an honor.”

His father, Steven Tarr, Jr., and mother, Lorraine Tarr, originally from South Amboy, currently reside in Beaumont, California. Tarr’s father flew from California to New Jersey to attend the ceremony, according to the statement.
