SOUTH BRUNSWICK – South Brunswick Police Chief Raymond Hayducka credited fast action by a resident with helping police stop a two-day crime spree.
“This resident, Mohammad Farooqi, observed his car breaking in and saw the suspects get in a vehicle and flee. Mr. Farooqi got in his personal vehicle and attempted to get the license plate of the suspects’ vehicle. His efforts went above and beyond and led to the suspects capture,” Hayducka said in a statement.
The incident began at 3:30 a.m. on June 7 when police were called to a burglary in progress to a motor vehicle on Kimberly Court. As officers were responding they were notified that the suspects had allegedly fled in a vehicle followed by the homeowner, according to the statement.
Police were told the suspects’ vehicle had crashed off Route 27 in Princeton, according to reports. Officers Jason Gassman and Brooke Labell allegedly found two 18-year-olds from North Brunswick standing outside the crash vehicle. Officers determined the suspects had allegedly broken into a half dozen cars over the previous two nights, according to reports.
The officers reportedly recovered jewelry, cash and a laptop that had been stolen. The suspects are charged in connection to six car burglaries on Kimberly Court, Creekside Court and Dunston Lane in South Brunswick. The suspects were released on a summons pending their first court appearance.
In addition, detectives from neighboring towns are investigating the suspects’ connection to several additional car burglaries over the past several days, according to South Brunswick police.
