Freehold Township plans improvements to Tighe Park tennis courts

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP – A $39,999 contract has been awarded by the Township Committee for the furnishing and delivery of tennis backboards for the tennis courts at Michael J. Tighe Park, Georgia Road.

Committee members recently awarded the contract to Pro Recreation, LLC (Sport Systems). Tennis backboards are walls that allow an individual to play tennis by himself.

Township Administrator Peter Valesi said each of the four tennis courts at Michael J. Tighe Park will receive one backboard. At present, there are no tennis backboards at the park.

“Backboards are designed to allow tennis players to practice by themselves by hitting a ball to a solid surface that has a line for where the net height will be. It is a tennis practice aid,” Valesi said. “Each court will be getting a backboard on the north fence line of the courts adjacent to the volleyball courts.

“The backboards were envisioned for a recreational purpose, but with the secondary purpose of stopping the volleyball court sand from blowing onto the tennis courts, which was causing a safety issue for tennis players who could slip on the sand that was deposited on the courts,” Valesi said.

In other business, the committee passed a resolution authorizing a $20,671 contract with the Battleground Country Club, Manalapan, to provide a golf course and banquet rental for the 2018 Freehold Municipal Alliance to Prevent Substance Abuse golf outing.

Additionally, committee members authorized a contract for public health education services for the mayor’s wellness campaign with Linda Brown. According to the resolution, the anticipated term of the contract is one year and is not to exceed $40,000.

And, the committee passed a resolution authorizing a $9,387 increase in a contract with VMG Group for roofing replacements at multiple buildings in the township. The increase is the second change order authorized for the project.

The original contract that was awarded to VMG Group in late 2017 totaled $682,000. The first change order was authorized by the committee in May and resulted in a $3,690 increase in the contract. The first change order was made for costs associated with the increase and decrease of contract values.

The second change order will increase the contract to $695,077. This change order was authorized for the removal and replacement of existing roof fence and posts due to excessive wood damage, according to the resolution.

Finally, the committee approved amusement games for the Monmouth County Fair, which will be held at the East Freehold Showgrounds, Kozloski Road, Freehold Township, from July 25-29. State law requires the governing body of the municipality where amusement games will be located to approve the proposed site of the amusement games, according to the resolution.

Committee members also passed a resolution authorizing temporary parking restrictions during the fair. From 8 a.m. July 25 to 11:59 p.m. July 29, no parking is allowed on both sides of Center Street to a point 2,500 feet from the intersection with the westward side of Kozloski Road and no parking is allowed on Freneau Drive from Kozloski Road to Poe Court.
