National Moth Week kicks off July 21

The seventh annual National Moth Week 2018 will kick off at 8:30 p.m. July 21 in the Butterfly Park on Rues Lane, East Brunswick. The event is free and open to the public.

New and experienced “moth-ers” are invited to bring their cameras to document the moths that land on lighted sheets that will be set up in the park. Sturdy shoes are recommended and attendees should bring along a flashlight and bug spray. Children can help with “painting” tree trunks with a sweet mixture to attract moths before it gets dark.

National Moth Week was founded by the Friends of the East Brunswick Environmental Commission in 2012 and quickly became an international citizen science project.

This year, the diverse Geometridae family of moths, comprising 23,000 species in North America and around the world, gets the spotlight for National Moth Week 2018, July 21-29.
