SPOTSWOOD–Striving to reduce vehicle congestion near G. Austin Schoenly Elementary School, the Spotswood Police Department will implement a new traffic pattern.
On or about Aug. 16, the police department was set to make changes in accordance with an ordinance, which revised the borough code.
This action will make the Madie Avenue/Kane Avenue intersection a three-way stop. It will also make Kane Avenue from that intersection to Adirondack Avenue a one-way street, according to a prepared statement from the Spotswood Police Department.
The purpose is to create an efficient and effective flow of traffic for both vehicles and pedestrians during school arrival and dismissal, according to a prepared statement.
The following will assist residents as the police department transitions to the new traffic pattern, according to the statement:
- Vehicle parking will be allowed on both sides of Kane Avenue but vehicles must face the direction of traffic.
- Student pick-up and drop-off will continue, but residents may not park their vehicles in front of the school on the yellow curbs from 7:30-8:30 a.m. and 2-4 p.m., in accordance with posted signage.
- Residents may not stop and wait for drop off in front of the yellow curbs. The school staff and crossing guard are there to direct residents forward to begin the drop-off process.
- As a rule, when residents increase their parking radius away from the school, residents will find a decrease in congestion as well as a speedy drop-off and pick-up.
- As a “walking” district, the police department will still encourage parents to park and walk their child(ren) when feasible.
