A 75-unit affordable housing development for people 55 and older has been granted state environmental permits and is headed for construction in October in Freehold Township.
PIRHL of Cleveland, Ohio, with offices in Hamilton Township, will build the four-story, elevator-serviced community, Wemrock Senior Living, and plans to complete it by November 2019. The development on the south side of Route 33 Business between Cardigan Bay Lane and Wemrock Road is designed to allow residents to age in place by connecting them to a continuum of services.
The building will feature 65 one‐bedroom apartments and 10 two-bedroom apartments, ranging in size from 750 to 925 square feet. The facility also will include community spaces, such as a fitness center, laundry rooms, a computer room, an outdoor covered patio on the first floor and a second floor community room with a transition to a roof deck.
An on‐site coordinator will connect residents with comprehensive services, such as health screenings, nutrition programs, benefits assistance, legal services and financial literacy seminars. Five housing units will be set aside for formerly homeless residents, for whom there will be no age restrictions.
The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection approved the flood hazard and freshwater wetlands permits on June 5. The project is awaiting Freehold Soil Conservation District, road opening and building permits, and construction will then begin.
AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is the nation’s largest free, volunteer-run tax assistance program. In tax year 2017 the Monmouth district provided tax preparation services at 11 sites and prepared more than 4,000 federal tax returns, essentially all of which also included a New Jersey return.
Volunteers are needed for the following roles: counselors work directly with taxpayers to prepare tax returns using on-line software; client facilitators welcome taxpayers, help organize their paperwork and manage the overall flow of service; technology coordinators manage computer equipment, ensure taxpayer data is secure and provide technical assistance to volunteers.
AARP membership is not required of volunteers or clients. Tax training starts in November. Prospective volunteers may email [email protected] for additional information.
