Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine needles through the skin and into specific points along the body. These points are called energy channels or meridians. Acupuncture is most commonly used to treat pain but is increasingly being used to improve one’s overall health and wellness. It may also reduce an individual’s stress level.
Traditional Chinese medicine explains acupuncture as a method used to balance the flow of energy (Qi) that flows through the acupuncture meridians in the body. By inserting the acupuncture needles into specific acu points along these meridians, it is hypothesized that the energy (Qi) flow will re-balance leading to increased well-being and decreased pain. The acu needles simulate neuro pathways that send signals to the brain and release neural hormones. These endorphins create a euphoric/happy feeling within the patient and aides in increasing their pain threshold.
Acupuncture is commonly used to relieve discomfort and pain associated with a variety of disorders and conditions including, but not limited to, low back pain, neck pain, joint pain, headaches/migraines, osteoarthritis, PMS, respiratory disorders, TMJ and chemotherapy/postoperative nausea and vomiting. The World Health Organization and National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health both state that acupuncture has a proven record in decreasing/eliminating pain symptoms.
Each acupuncturist has a unique style, often blending multiple disciplines to create a treatment plan customized for each patient. To determine the best treatment plan for each patient, the acupuncturist will ask about symptoms, past medical history, lifestyle and previous treatments. This is followed by an examination of the painful area, an inspection of the tongue and ending with an assessment of radial pulses. Once the evaluation is completed, the acupuncturist will create a treatment plan and then begin to insert sterile acupuncture needles that will remain in place for 15-45 minutes.
At the completion of the treatment the majority of patients report feeling either relaxed or energized and report having less pain.
