One man killed, several injured in Monroe crash

MONROE – Police are investigating a fatal collision in which one passenger was killed and several others were injured in a crash in Monroe early on Sept. 10

The deceased passenger was identified as Shashikant Patel, 81, of Monroe. He was pronounced dead at the scene from the injuries he sustained in the crash, according to information provided by Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey and Chief Michael Lloyd of the Monroe Police Department.

The driver and eight other passengers in the 2004 Chevy Express Van were taken to local hospitals and treated for their serious to moderate injuries, officials said.

The driver and passenger of the other vehicle, a 2017 Honda Civic, were also taken to a local hospital and treated for minor injuries.

The preliminary investigation has determined that the driver of the Chevy Express Van allegedly failed to yield to a stop sign at the intersection of Matchaponix Avenue and Spotswood Gravel Hill Road and collided with the Honda Civic, according to the statement.
