TOMS RIVER- The Downtown Toms River farmers market has been showcasing local farms for 13 years.
Every Wednesday each week at the Ocean County Parking garage lawn alongside Hadley Avenue, residents pick from a collection of fruits, vegetables, baked goods and more.
“We do try to have about four farmers local. We have four farms that offer produce, we have brought in a winery, spice mixes and cheeses,” said Kim Dippolito, marketing director for Downtown Toms River.
Argos Farm was one of the local farms featured on Aug.22. Angela Martin owns the farm with her husband Spyro Martin.
“Farmers are important because they give you everything home grown. We do our best to be sustainable and to grow everything organically,” Martin said.
This is the first year Argos Farm has been with the Downtown Toms River farmers market.
“We’ve been at the Forked River farmers market for four years and we also have four years at our own farm,” said Martin. Martin has noticed that more people are conscientious about finding organic farms but also shopping locally.
The farmers market has been at Hadley Avenue for the past two years. The market was moved from Huddy Park. From mid-May to the week of thanksgiving in November residents with have the opportunity to purchase fresh goods.
The first of each Wednesday of each month the market celebrates Jersey Fresh fruit and vegetables with a free raffle.
