Some of the Horrible Aerial Crashes in History

Aviation Programs like Fly Aeroguard are making flights safer. It’s important because the history is full of small technical issues that led to horrific accidents. Following, we are revisiting history, especially New Jersey and point out some of the most horrible aerial crashes.  

Flight 6780, American Airlines

Elizabeth, New Jersey was the base of an accident that happened on 22nd January 1952. It took the lives of 30 people. The flight was going from Buffalo to Newark. It veered off course when it started to descend and drifted until it hit an apartment building. Till today, no explanation has been given.

National Airlines 101

On 11th February 1952, a flight from Newark to Miami crashed at Elizabeth, New Jersey. It was carrying 63 passengers out of which 30 survived. This was the second crash in that area in three months. Later, Pam AM took control of National Airlines in 1980.

Hindenburg

Hindenburg is remembered as one of the largest, and most reputable airships in History. It was one of the largest airships commissioned in Germany. It crashed at Lakehurst and went down in flames claiming the lives of 36 people. The Zeppelin went down on 6th May 1937. It was broadcasted in newsreels across the country. There was a debate on what caused this disaster, and most agree with its source of fuel.
The ship was powered by Hydrogen. An electric charge took place in fuel talk and resulted in a fire which made the Zeppelin meet its demise.

U.S Air Force- Fort Dix

A Douglas C-118A crashed on Fort-Dix McGuire on 13th July 1956. The transport was carrying 66 passengers, from which only 11 survived. It took off from McGuire Airforce Base. It hit an Air Pocket just as it left the runway, and crashed 30 miles South of Trenton.

Miami Airlines

A C-46 crashed at Elizabeth, New Jersey on 16th December 1951. The crash took the lives of 56 passengers, sparing the pilot and a few other. According to the investigation, the plane had a poor safety record and had a mechanical failure which led to an engine fire mid-air.
The pilot managed to guide the plan to an empty spot surrounded by roads and apartment buildings to prevent further loss.

USS Akron

Better known as the USS Akron Disaster, it took the lives of 73 people when it crashed into the ocean near the coast of Barnegat Light. The airship headed into a storm on 4th April 1933 where it met its demise. This is one of the deadliest airships crashes in history. A search party was sent a few days later, which also ended in a tragedy.

Linea Aeropostal Venezolana

The Venezuelan Airliner crashed on 20th June 1956. It is by far the deadliest aerial tragedy in the history of New Jersey. It claimed the lives of its 74 passengers. This was one of the most dangerous commercial air crashes at that time.
The reason, The Lockheed L-10493-55 or Lockheed Constellation had an engine issue that somehow burst into flames and fell right into the ocean as the pilot tried an emergency landing.
