Wanted: A few high school students to serve on East Windsor Township’s advisory boards and committees. No experience necessary.
As they have in years past, East Windsor officials are inviting high school students to volunteer on an assortment of advisory boards and committees – from the Environmental Commission to the Clean Communities Advisory Committee – and to work alongside adult volunteers.
The initiative is a good program because it allows high school students to meet and get to know local officials, Mayor Janice S. Mironov said. It also encourages a greater interest in local government, and besides, volunteering is basic in American society, she said.
“We believe the program is a terrific opportunity for students to get a better understanding of how local government works. We appreciate, and get pleasure from, the input the students give us,” Mironov said.
The boards and committees included in the program are the Commission on Aging, the Clean Communities Advisory Committee and the Economic Development Commission. Other panels include the Environmental Commission, the Health Advisory Board, the Recreation Board and the East Windsor Municipal Alliance for the Prevention of Substance Abuse.
The Commission on Aging advises the Township Council on the development, coordination and implementation of the programs and services that are available to the township’s senior citizens.
The Clean Communities Advisory Committee is responsible for planning activities for the litter cleanup program, while the Economic Development Commission offers input to the council and the Planning Board on how to promote economic and industrial development.
The Health Advisory Board advises the municipal manager on public health-related issues. The Recreation Board suggests recreational programs, plans and activities that meet the township’s recreational needs to the governing body and the director of recreation.
The municipal alliance focuses on preparing and recommending intervention and educational programs in an effort to combat drug and alcohol abuse.
