Aberdeen Day festivities on Sept. 29

 

Mayor Fred Tagliarini and the Aberdeen Township Council have announced that Aberdeen Day 2018, the township’s annual town-wide celebration, will take place on  Sept. 29, featuring events at Matawan Regional High School and additional locations around town.

This year’s lineup includes first-time events at Cliffwood Beach and other venues in Aberdeen, as well as new participants in the shopping center events along Route 34.

Free shuttle service will once again be offered between venues and the overflow parking lot at the Aberdeen-Matawan train station from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.  The shuttle service is made possible by Addison Park, The Blue Rock Café, JR’s Tree Service, Kee Engineering, Livoti’s Old World Market, Meineke Car Care Center, Parness & Associates, and the Town Square Diner.

 

Aberdeen Day will kick-off with the Cambridge Park 5k Run/Walk to benefit the Cambridge Park Pre-School and the Where Angels Play Foundation.  Registration begins at the Aberdeen-Matawan Train Station at 7 a.m. and the race starts at 8:45 a.m. After the 5k run/walk there will be a concert for children put on by “The Little Rockers Band.”  For more information on the race and concert please visit cambridgepark5k.com.

The Run/Walk will be followed by the 16th Annual Yard Sale, Bake Sale & Snack Shack BBQ hosted by Cross of Glory Lutheran Church from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The church is located at 95 Cambridge Drive.

Among the new events, over in Cliffwood Beach, free use of kayaks in Raritan Bay will be offered, courtesy of Garden State Kayakers from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The kayaks will be launched right on the beachfront, near the corner of Ocean Avenue and Lakeshore Drive. In addition, the Aberdeen Township Environmental Board will hold its first-ever “Seine the Bay Day” beachfront event from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. to determine what species swim in the shallow part of the estuary.

 

From noon to 3:00 p.m., the Cambridge Club located at 400 Lloyd Road will open its doors to the community, offering wine samplings, games, a display of classic Corvettes, snacks and tours.  From noon to 5 p.m., Star Car Exhibits will present a display of vehicles from famous movies at its location at 1170 Highway 34, just south of Lloyd Road.

 

The 12 p.m. to 4  p.m. celebration at Matawan Regional High School will remain the day’s primary attraction, hosting longtime favorites including: music by Painted Young Band and three performances by Bwanna Jim’s Wildlife Show, along with a petting zoo sponsored by Quality 1st Basement Systems, free children’s rides, a classic car show, crafts, food, vendor booths, informational displays by local non-profit organizations and more. Platinum sponsors of the High School events are: Aberdeen Townsquare Shopping Center, Addison Park, Bank of America, The Blue Rock Café, and Locked & Loaded Trailers.

 

Special business-sponsored events, including entertainment, free food tastings, and sidewalk sales will once again take place at two shopping centers on Route 34 throughout the day. From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Stop & Shop center, DeMarco’s Catering and Gourmet Deli will present free food and entertainment along with special promotions offered by Famous Footwear and Smoothie King, while Stop & Shop will have a Customer Appreciation Day from noon to 4:00 p.m. Over at Aberdeen Town Square, from noon to 2:00 p.m., Livoti’s will present free food and games. Special promotions will also be offered by various other merchants at the center, including Baya Bar (a new eatery serving up acai and kale bowls). Later in the day, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., The Court Jester and Denino’s will partner to present a Beer Garden.

Meanwhile, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., the Fiorendo Sigismondi Community Center located at 651 Prospect Ave. in Cliffwood Beach, will feature appearances and autograph signings by former New York Giants linebacker Carl Banks and wide receiver Stephen Baker, former heavyweight contender Gerry Cooney, former New York Yankees pitcher John “The Count” Montefusco, and former Boston Red Sox and New York Mets infielder John Valentin.  Complimentary photos of the athletes and autographs will be provided.  Other sports related items will be available for purchase.
