ABERDEEN – A luxury 227-unit apartment complex that neighbors the Aberdeen-Matawan train station could help transform the small town into a New Jersey Transit Village.
In a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Oct. 2, Aberdeen Mayor Fred Tagliarini, representatives from New Jersey Transit, developers from BNE Real Estate Group and municipal officials praised the completion of ‘The Link.’
“The proximity of the train is really a key part of this project being successful,” developer Jonathan Schwartz said. “This is a downtown urban project inside of the suburban town of Aberdeen.”
Schwartz, of BNE Real Estate Group, said the series of five mixed-use apartment buildings are a combination of one-bedroom and two-bedroom units. He said the rental units are ideal for individual who use the train to get to and from where they need to be each day.
Schwartz said the amenities inside the apartment buildings are “designed to foster a socially interactive atmosphere.”
The apartment complex features a fitness center, an outdoor swimming pool, a dog park, lounges, private office space and upscale amenities, Schwartz said. Three retail tenants will reside on the first floor of the first building in the mixed-use complex, he said.
Restaurant oriented tenants ‘Brooklyn Bagels’ and ‘Frutta Bowls’ have signed lease agreements for the space, Schwartz said. A third tenant is being sought out, he said.
Shwartz said 50 percent of the individuals who reside in the apartment units use the New Jersey Transit system. He said 60 percent of units are at capacity.
“We recognize the extraordinary qualities that are present (in Aberdeen), as well as the untapped potential of the site,” Schwartz said. “A location adjacent to a train station meant we could effectively appeal to a wide range of existing and new Aberdeen residents who appreciate the convenience of reliable mass transportation serving virtually at their doorstep.
Schwartz said the rent per month of one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartment units range from $1,700 to $2,500.
“Residential, retail and transit is an unbeatable combination,” a New Jersey Transit representative said during the ceremony.”‘The Link’ at Aberdeen-Matawan station is a fine example for future communities looking to use transit oriented designs.”
