Middlesex County College alumni share their research on strokes

Two Middlesex County College (MCC) alumni and one current student are co-authors of an article in “Molecular Neurobiology,” a bimonthly peer-reviewed scientific journal, following their research at the Hackensack Meridian Health JFK Medical Center Neuroscience Institute.

Ahmed Aly of South Brunswick, MCC Class of 2018, Diandra Ruiz of Carteret, also Class of 2018, and current student Kristy Garcia of Middlesex Borough focused on gene expression changes in the brain during a stroke.

This research, which was presented at both the 2017 Fall and 2018 Spring MCC Science Symposia, has provided new insights into the complexity of stroke-related gene transcription, allowing for a better understanding of how a stroke affects gene expression and physiological processes in the adult brain, according to information provided by MCC.

Aly is now in his first semester at Rutgers University and Ruiz is in her second semester at Montclair State University, both pursuing bachelor’s degrees in biology.
