A proposal to construct an assisted living facility near the Princeton Shopping Center was turned down by the Princeton Zoning Board of Adjustment last week.
Sunrise Senior Living, a Virginia based company with communities around the country and internationally, was looking to build an 84-unit, 82,200-square-foot-building on nearly 5 acres of vacant land at the corner of North Harrison Street and Terhune Road.
The area was not zoned to allow that kind of use, hence the application to the zoning board. By a unanimous vote, board members rejected Sunrise’s proposal at its meeting on Oct. 16.
“We are disappointed with the recent decision,” said Jerry Liang, senior vice president of development for Sunrise Senior Living, in a statement. “For more than 35 years, our Sunrise communities have become part of the greater vibrant neighborhood, through volunteerism, caregiver support groups and meaningful Sunrise resident activities that include regular patronage of local businesses.
“Families remain limited in their choices for conveniently located, high-quality senior care within Princeton. We are exploring options so we may meet our company’s mission to champion quality of life for all seniors,” Liang said.
