JACKSON – Six Flags Great Adventure, Jackson, recently received the Zoological Association of America Education Award of Excellence for three of its animal education programs – Safari Off-Road Education, Wild Encounters and Silver Safari.
“We are extremely honored to receive this award. As stewards of the environment, our goal is to help ensure the survival of these amazing species for generations to come, and our passion for education is inspiring children and adults alike to better care for the world around us,” said Dr. Bill Rives, director and chief veterinarian for Great Adventure.
According to a press release, the three Six Flags education programs recognized for excellence are:
• Safari Off-Road Education – Six Flags turns its 510-acre safari and theme park into a giant outdoor classroom. This exclusive guided tour provides access to 1,200 animals from six continents. Students learn about conservation, diet and natural environments for more than 70 species of animals. They can hand-feed giraffes, touch reptiles and snakes, and see other animals up close, such as sea lions, a giant anteater and tropical birds. This program corresponds with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards for grades K-8 and is offered on non-operating days in the spring for an optimal learning experience.
• Wild Encounters – This animal outreach program brings the thrill of the safari into classrooms, senior centers, scouting events and more. Wild Encounters offers three program options that teach about animals’ characteristics, habitats, history and diets while showcasing live, exotic animals and their caretakers: Fur, Feathers and Scales for grades K-5; Behind the Biology for grades 6-8; and a customized program. Animal educators present exotic birds, reptiles and mammals. Lesson plans are developed by Six Flags’ state-certified teacher and correspond with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards.
• Silver Safari – This education program is geared toward adults age 55 and over who want to tour the world’s animals and gain a close-up encounter at their own pace. Guests board open-air safari trucks with a personal tour guide on days when the theme park is closed. Safari staff work to accommodate all activity levels, provide door-to-truck service with minimal walking required, and trucks that can accommodate wheelchairs. Silver Safari Tours are available on non-operating days in the fall.
