Burlington County Sheriff Jean Stanfield is warning residents about a telephone scam in which individuals pretending to be from the Burlington County Sheriff’s Department are calling victims claiming to have a warrant for their arrest.
“We want to take this time to remind residents that the Sheriff’s Department and local law enforcement will never contact you in this manner and will not solicit payments over the phone,” Stanfield said.
“According to reports, the caller claims to be a deputy with our agency stating that the victim did not appear for jury duty and instructs them to pay off the fine using gift cards or other sources to avoid arrest,” Stanfield added.
Stanfield said he encourages anyone who receives a call of this nature to call the Burlington County Sheriff’s Department Special Investigations Unit at 609-265-5504.
“Our residents must be aware of this type of scam or any type of scam,” Stanfield said. “Please share this information with your family and friends, especially seniors, as they are frequently targeted by these scams.”
