HAZLET – Republican Township Committeeman Scott Aagre will serve as Hazlet’s mayor in 2019 and Republican Township Committeeman Michael Glackin will serve as deputy mayor.
Aagre and Glackin were unanimously elected to those positions by their fellow members of the Hazlet Township Committee during the 2019 reorganization meeting on Jan. 1 at the municipal building.
Aagre has been a committeeman since 2008 and has served as mayor in 2010, 2011, 2016 and 2018.
In Hazlet’s form of government, residents do not directly elect a mayor. In January, the five members of the governing body select a committee member to serve as mayor for the year. A second committeeman is chosen to serve as deputy mayor.
Earlier in the meeting, James McKay and Tara Corcoran-Clark were sworn in to begin serving three-year terms. McKay and Corcoran-Clark were the winners in the November 2018 election.
State Sen. Declan J. O’Scanlon Jr. administered the oath of office to the mayor, deputy mayor and new members of the committee.
Republican Sue Kiley was the fifth member of the Township Committee who was serving a term from 2018-20. In November, Kiley was elected to the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders and subsequently resigned from her Township Committee seat.
Because Kiley is a Republican, the Hazlet Republican Party will have the opportunity to identify candidates to fill the vacancy on the committee. Republicans will soon provide names to the committee and members of the governing body will select Kiley’s successor.
Republicans hold a 5-0 majority on the committee.
