George Patrick McCormick, 85, of Lawrenceville, NJ passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, January 17th surrounded by his loving family.
He was a longtime Lawrence resident having moved to the township in 1966. Born in Madison, Wisconsin, Georgewas a graduate of the University of Wisconsin, Madison with a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and received his master’s degree in Industrial Engineering from Lehigh University. He interrupted his education to serve in the United States Army with posts at Ft. Monmouth, NJ, White Sands, NM and San Francisco, CA. George started his career at Bell Labs in Whippany, NJ where he met his wife Lorraine. He had worked for over 35 years in the telecommunications-engineering field for AT&T and retired in 1990 from Lucent Technologies as a computer systems engineer. He was active in the Delaware Valley Business Club of AMBUCS and later enjoyed his time at the Lawrence Senior Center. Being from Wisconsin, George loved being outdoors. He was an accomplished ice skater and enjoyed sledding with his children. He was an avid gardener, spending most of his summers tending to his vegetables and was an early advocate of recycling and a farm-to-table lifestyle. He was a lover of history and delighted in the “treasures” he found at antique auctions. Always appreciating a laugh, George was quick with a joke or a funny story. His priority was always his family and he especially enjoyed their time together at the Jersey shore and coastal Maine. His day was never complete without a bowl of ice cream.
Son of the late Robert and Leone Martin McCormick he was predeceased by six of his brothers: John, Robert, William, Thomas, Michael and Richard McCormick. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Lorraine; his children, Sean and his wife Kalli Varaklis, Christine Del Duca and her husband Gary, Lynette Devlin and her husband Mark and Sharon Lubrano and her husband William; his ten grandchildren: Thomas, Grady, Matthew, Andrew, Declan, Darren, Sarah, Madeleine, Carson and Paige; his two sisters Mary Pliszka and Anne Endres, his brother Patrick McCormickand many nieces and nephews.
