SAYREVILLE – A commuter bus service’s routes between Sayreville and New York City are scheduled to be discontinued.
Academy Bus, a private transportation company that operates commuter buses between New Jersey and New York City, announced on Jan. 31 it would be discontinuing service to Sayreville after the conclusion of service on March 1.
According to information provided by the company, Academy Bus provides weekday commuter bus service from points in Sayreville to Midtown Manhattan and Wall Street. Points in Sayreville where the commuter buses are offered include the Harbor Club Condominium and Winding Wood Apartments for both Midtown Manhattan and Wall Street, and Park Village and the Sayreville Park and Ride for Wall Street.
The commuter service, according to Academy, has been provided to the borough for more than 25 years.
In a notice announcing the discontinuation of service, representatives of Academy stated that the company has continued to see a consistent decline in ridership.
“Unfortunately, we regret to inform you Academy will discontinue Sayreville service following operations on Friday, March 1, 2019,” the notice reads. “We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you [commuters] for your patronage.”
Following the release of Academy’s notice, on Feb. 1, the Sayreville Police Department and the borough’s website stated that Sayreville officials are aware of the scheduled cancellation and are working on the matter with Academy, New Jersey Transit and legislators in the New Jersey State Assembly, with more information to be provided to the public when available.
“Please note that we [officials in Sayreville] are working with Academy, NJ Transit and our local legislators to rectify this situation with the best possible outcome for the residents of Sayreville,” the officials’ statement reads. “Updates will be posted on the borough website and social media outlets as they become available.”
