Dentist to perform show in Freehold Borough on Feb. 23

FREEHOLD – Dentist, an Asbury Park indie surf rock trio, will perform at Mark Costanzo’s Concerts in the Studio, Jackson Terrace, Freehold Borough, at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 23. The concert will kick off a three-week tour that will take the band to SXSW and the Treefort Music Fest.

The intimate house show is limited to 55 tickets and will be followed by a potluck dinner. Guests may bring their own dish and/or beverages, according to a press release. Tickets to the show are $17 and may be purchased at https://concertsinthestudio.com

The band will have copies of its latest release, “Night Swimming” (Cleopatra Records) available on vinyl for $20, as well as CDs and T-shirts.

Dentist centers around the songwriting partnership of Emily Bornemann (vocals and bass guitar) and Justin Bornemann (guitar), who had been writing songs and performing together in various ways since first meeting in 2008. The band is rounded out by Matt Hockenjos on drums.

“Night Swimming” juxtaposes catchy indie surf pop with lyrical themes about social anxiety and heartache, according to the press release. Produced by Andy Bova and Justin Bornemann, the album was mastered by Jürgen Engler (Die Krupps, Nico, Iggy and The Stooges, Queensryche).

“This album was an attempt to capture all the different aspects of ourselves and create something we would want to listen to,” Justin Bornemann said.

“Musically we are attracted to rawness and simplicity, but melodically we lean toward a pop aesthetic. The lyrics tend to be focused on social anxiety, heartache and loss, but sometimes reveal love and optimism,” Emily Bornemann added.

Dentist has shared the stage with Television, Screaming Females, Ringo Deathstarr and Laura Stevenson, among others.

Formed in 2013 in Asbury Park, Dentist’s sound combines the freedom of the beach atmosphere and the urgency of the city into a fuzzed out, surf punk-tinged brand of indie pop with hooks and infectious melodies to spare, according to the press release.

Dentist’s debut album, released in 2014, was described by Pandora as “a deliriously infectious collection of fuzzy, California-styled indie pop jangle and sun dappled garage rock crunch.”

Their sophomore album “Ceilings” was released in 2016. The single “Meet You There (In Delaware)” found its way onto Spotify’s Fresh Finds playlist and was chosen as one of Daytrotter’s top 100 songs of 2016, according to the press release.

In 2018, Dentist embarked on a nationwide tour, running from July thru August and covering more than 25 cities.

In March, Dentist will be heading to Austin, Texas, for another week at SXSW, followed by an appearance at the Treefort Music Fest in Boise, Idaho. “Night Swimming” can be ordered via Bandcamp or streamed on Spotify.
