Reginald S. Pokallus, resident of Hillsborough, New Jersey,
passed away on February 15, 2019, at the age of 85.
The son of the late Herman R. And Helen C. Pokallus, Reginald
was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Janice, to whom he
was married for 51 happy years. He is survived by four daughters,
one son, his sister, and many grandchildren.
Reginald was born and lived in Brooklyn before moving with his
parents to Matawan, New Jersey as a child. He attended Rutgers
University, where he earned a Ph.D. in microbiology and
afterwards worked for several decades in research for Johnson &
Johnson.
He was an avid gardener and an accomplished folk art painter.
He loved classical music, fine literature, history, and read
constantly on a wide range of subjects. He spent his last years
watching musicals from his youth, enjoying the dancing of Fred
Astaire, Ginger Rogers, and Gene Kelly. No matter many
hundreds of times he watched the same movies, he always
marveled anew at the beauty of dance and sang along,
remembering the words. 'Over the Rainbow' always made him cry
as he sang with Judy Garland. Deeply religious, he was a life-long
Roman Catholic and a member of Mary, Mother of God Church in
Hillsborough. Reginald and his wife made Hillsborough their home
and actively participated in the community and the schools.
He will be deeply missed.
