Speed limit on Route 522 will be reduced during bridge repairs

Motorists who drive on Route 522 (Freehold-Englishtown Road) in Manalapan and Freehold Township are being cautioned that an upcoming project will result in a change to the speed limit and the installation of a temporary traffic signal.

Route 522 is a Monmouth County road and during a recent meeting the Monmouth County Board of Freeholders passed a resolution establishing a construction speed limit on Route 522 between Old Monmouth Road, Freehold Township, and Tennent Road, Manalapan.

The resolution states the county engineer has determined there is a need for repairs to bridge MN-32 on Route 522 over Weamaconk Creek in Manalapan. The repairs will require staged construction, including the use of a temporary traffic signal and one-lane alternating traffic operation.

The county engineer has recommended, and the freeholders have authorized, a construction speed limit of 35 mph on Route 522 between Old Monmouth Road and Tennent Road during construction “to ensure the safety of the traveling public and construction personnel,” according to the resolution.

The speed limit in the designated area will be 35 mph, and temporary signs will be posted for one month or until construction has been completed, whichever comes first, only when one of the following conditions exist, according to the resolution:

• When reduced lane widths are in use;

• Where hazards or obstructions are present and construction barriers are in use;

• When workers are on or adjacent to the traveled way;

• When temporary traffic signals are in operation and one-lane alternating traffic is in effect;

• When other conditions exist which are deemed potential hazards to the traveling public.

Freehold Township Police Chief Ernest Schriefer and Manalapan Police Chief Michael Fountain have been advised of the freeholders’ action, according to the resolution.
