MONROE – Police are investigating why the driver of an Infiniti crossed over a double yellow line, causing a fatal crash in Monroe.
Karam Awad, 56, of Springfield, was driving a 2006 Lincoln Town Car south on Applegarth Road, just south of the intersection with Lilac Road, around 5:11 p.m. on April 15, according to information provided by the Monroe Township Police Department. A 26-year-old male from Monroe was driving a 2006 Infiniti G35 north in the same area.
According to reports, the Monroe man allegedly crossed over the double yellow center line into the southbound lane of travel and reportedly struck the Lincoln head on. Police are not yet sure why this occurred, according to the statement.
The driver and his wife, 52, who was the front seat passenger, suffered serious injuries and were transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick by the Monroe Township First Aid Squad. Awad was pronounced deceased at the hospital.
The wife sustained shoulder and lower abdominal injuries, according to reports. She was released on April 16, according to an update from police.
The Monroe man was also transported to the hospital with minor injuries. He was released on April 15, according to an update from police.
As of April 17, no summonses have been issued since the investigation is ongoing, police said.
