Matawan Police Department installs medication dropoff box

MATAWAN–Joining other municipalities in the fight to counteract prescription drug abuse, the Matawan Police Department has installed a Project Medicine Drop box at police headquarters.

The Matawan Police Department announced on May 28 that it has joined the New Jersey Attorney General’s Project Medicine Drop initiative, according to a prepared statement from the police department.

The initiative makes it easier and more convenient for residents to take an active role in the fight against the nationwide epidemic of opiate and heroin abuse, which is often fueled by the abuse of prescription painkillers, according to the statement.

“Project Medicine Drop is a natural addition to our commitment to help improve the public safety and quality of life in Matawan Borough. It will encourage our residents to be fully aware of the potential for abuse presented by otherwise beneficial medications,” Matawan Police Chief Thomas J. Falco Jr. said in the statement.

Residents may visit the police station at 150 Main St. 24/7 to dispose of their unused or excess medications. Drop off any unwanted, unused or expired prescription medications anonymously, with no questions asked.
