South River approves resolution for water pumping station repairs

SOUTH RIVER–The Borough Council approved a resolution authorizing an emergency contract to A.C. Schultes Inc. to fund repairs at the Tile Yard pumping station.

The borough’s Water-Sewer Department does routine inspections of various pump stations in the borough. During these inspections, it was determined that the Title Yard pumping equipment and gate valves were inoperable and require immediate attention since the conditions have created an imminent danger to the health, safety and welfare of the residents, according to the council agenda.

Borough Administrator Art Londensky said that one pump has a broken shaft caused by objects being placed incorrectly in the system. The valves were not closing properly due to wear and tear caused by the same problem.

The council approved the resolution awarding a $26,070 contract to A.C. Schultes Inc. on June 10.

Londensky said he was notified by the borough’s Sewer Department about the needed repairs on June 3.

The equipment is located three stories below grade on borough property off of Whitehead Avenue, according to Londensky.

Officials have obtained an estimate from A.C. Schultes Inc. for the cost to replace the Tile Yard’s pumping equipment and gate valves in order to relieve this emergency situation and provide essential services to borough residents, according to the council agenda.

“They will replace the valves shortly and the pump has been ordered. The pumping station has two pumps so the remaining pump is fully operational,” Londensky said.

Londensky said this emergency does not affect residents’ water because Tile Yard is a sewage pumping station.
