A man from Piscataway has been sentenced to serve 65 years in a New Jersey state prison for fatally shooting a North Brunswick resident in his home on May 14, 2017.
Jerome Davis, 43, of Piscataway, was sentenced on June 27 in New Brunswick by Superior Court Judge Colleen M. Flynn for the murder of Patrick Olarerin, 57, of North Brunswick, according to information provided by Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey.
The sentence was imposed after Davis was found guilty by a jury on May 2 of first-degree murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and burglary for entering the home of the victim.
Davis received a prison term of 65 years in state prison for the murder. This term is subject to the No Early Release Act. As such, the defendant will have to serve 85 percent of his prison term before becoming eligible for parole, according to the statement.
In addition, he was sentenced to the following prison terms which are to run concurrent to the 65 years he received for the murder: 10 years for burglary which is also subject to the No Early Release Act, 10 years for unlawful possession of a weapon, and 10 years for possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. Both weapon sentences are subject to a 5-year parole ineligibility pursuant to the Graves Act.
During a three-week trial that began on April 9, Middlesex County Assistant Prosecutor Amber Gibbs and Middlesex County Assistant Prosecutor Vanessa Craveiro presented evidence and testimony showing that Davis previously stalked and harassed the victim, who was dating Davis’ ex-girlfriend. On May 14, 2017, Davis entered the home of the victim and fatally shot him.
