Aiming to shine a spotlight on what they allege are inhumane treatment of immigrant families fleeing across the border into the United States, the grassroots group Lights for Liberty is organizing a candlelight vigil on Hinds Plaza next to the Princeton Public Library on July 12.
The event, which starts at 7 p.m., will feature live music and an art exhibit, leading up to a roster of speakers who will talk about the issue of detention camps at 8 p.m. It is part of a worldwide event organized by Lights for Liberty, which is a loose-knit coalition of grassroots activists.
At 9 p.m., attendees will light candles in a silent vigil for the people who are being held in the detention camps.
Among the speakers are Maria Juega, co-founder of the Latin American Legal Defense and Education Fund (LALDEF), as well as Patricia Fernandez-Kelly, who chairs LALDEF’s board and who is the director of Princeton University’s Center for Migration and Development.
Also, Princeton Mayor Liz Lempert, Princeton Councilwoman Leticia Fraga, Assemblyman Andrew Zwicker (D-Hunterdon/Mercer/Middlesex/Somerset), and Veronica Olivares-Weber of the Princeton Human Rights Commission will offer remarks.
