KEYPORT – The Keyport Borough Council has awarded a one-year contract to Suburban Disposal for solid waste and recyclable materials collection and disposal for the borough.
Councilman Joseph Sheridan, Councilman Isaiah Cooper, Councilman Matthew Goode, Councilwoman Victoria Pacheco, Councilman Dennis Fotopoulos and Councilwoman Delia McDermott voted to award the contract to the company during a meeting on June 18.
According to a resolution, Keyport received bids from Suburban Disposal Inc. and Waste Management of New Jersey Inc. to provide the services to the borough. Upon review, it was determined that Suburban was the lowest responsible bidder.
The council members said they desired “to enter into an agreement with Suburban, effective June 1, 2019 and terminating May 31, 2020, with an option for
two additional two-year extensions, for the provision of solid waste and recyclable
material collection and disposal, at a cost of $274,800 for the initial
term.”
In other business, council members authorized the transfer of Patrick Quirk from the Freehold Borough Police Department to the Keyport Police Department.
According to the council, Keyport had a need for the appointment of one officer to the police department.
The Intergovernmental Transfer Program “provides the opportunity for eligible New Jersey state and local government employees with permanent civil service status to transfer between state and local employment jurisdictions while maintaining their permanent status,” according to a resolution.
The resolution states that “this (transfer) program promotes more efficient public service by allowing civil service jurisdictions to share talented and experienced individuals with other governmental sectors, thereby reducing the time and cost of recruitment and testing, and eliminating the need for up-front training.”
Council members said administrators in the police department interviewed the eligible candidates to determine the best qualified applicants and said Police Chief Mark Hafner recommended Quirk for the appointment.
In a unanimous vote, the council members authorized Quirk’s transfer from Freehold Borough to Keyport, effective immediately, at a salary of $50,297.
