Sayreville school board plans to hire monitors for hallways, restrooms

SAYREVILLE – The job description for a new position to be filled by individuals who will help supervise school hallways and restrooms has been approved in the Sayreville School District.

On July 16, members of the Board of Education approved a job description for a part-time hallway/restroom monitor.

According to district administrators, the monitor will report to the principal and assistant principal of the building to which he has been assigned and will assist in the supervision of hallways and restrooms.

Superintendent of Schools Richard Labbe said administrators are looking to hire three part-time hallway/restroom monitors.

The goal is to ensure the safety and well-being of students, and to promote respectful and responsible behavior by children in hallways and bathrooms, according to district administrators.

According to the job description for the monitor, the qualifications are having high school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED); minimum experience as determined by the board; knowledge of adolescent and young adult social and emotional development; good oral communication skills; a required criminal history background check and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status; the ability to understand and effectively follow directions; the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff; the ability to connect with students when eliciting their cooperation; and to exercise maturity when addressing and reporting behavior that is not in accordance with the code of conduct.

According to the job description, monitors assigned to corridors will ensure the safety and well-being of students during instructional periods and the passing time between periods; ensure that during instructional periods all students and visitors in corridors have passes/appropriate identification and/or are being escorted by a staff member; and immediately report to the main office or security personnel any students and/or visitors who are in hallways without a pass/identification and/or an escort.

Monitors assigned to restrooms will ensure the safety and well-being of students during instructional periods and the passing time between periods; ensure that all students using a restroom sign in before and sign out after use; and immediately report to the main office or security personnel any students who demonstrate behavior not aligned with the code of conduct in restrooms, or instances in which there is evidence of such, including but not limited to violence, harassment, intimidation, bullying, vandalism, and the smoking and vaping of substances, according to the job description.

The hallway/restroom monitors will participate in in-service training and perform other related duties as assigned. The salary and work year for the monitors have yet to be determined by the board. A monitor’s work schedule is not to exceed 29.5 hours per week.
