61-year-old man suffers two broken legs after hit by car on Route 1

EDISON – A 61-year-old man allegedly failed to observe designated crosswalks and suffered two broken legs after he was allegedly hit by a car while trying to cross busy Route 1, just south of Townsley Street, according to police.

The incident occurred after 11 a.m. on Aug. 1. The victim, a guest at Lee’s Motel on Route 1, was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick for treatment of his injuries, police said.

Witnesses told police the victim allegedly climbed over a center divider on Route 1 while trying to cross from the southbound to northbound lanes, Police Lt. Robert Dudash said.

Patrolman Michael Winters, who investigated the accident, issued a summons to the injured man for failing to observe designated crosswalks.

A 64-year-old Edison motorist, whose vehicle struck the man, was upset, but uninjured, according to police. He has not been charged, Dudash said. The accident remains under investigation.
