ALLENTOWN – With praise from residents and members of the governing body, Laurie A. Roth has been reappointed to a three-year term as Allentown’s municipal clerk and been granted tenure in the position.
Borough Council members passed a resolution to reappoint Roth during their Aug. 20 meeting. Roth’s new three-year term will run from Oct. 5, 2019, through Oct. 4, 2022.
A municipal clerk in New Jersey has numerous duties, including the following, according to law.justia.com:
• Act as secretary of the municipal corporation and custodian of the municipal seal and of all minutes, books, deeds, bonds, contracts, and archival records of the municipal corporation;
• Act as secretary to the governing body, prepare meeting agendas at the discretion of the governing body, be present at all meetings of the governing body, keep a journal of the proceedings of every meeting, retain the original copies of all ordinances and resolutions, and record the minutes of every meeting;
• Serve as the chief administrative officer in all elections held in the municipality;
• Serve as chief registrar of voters in the municipality;
• Serve as the administrative officer responsible for the acceptance of applications for licenses and permits and the issuance of licenses and permits.
During public comment, residents and representatives of various commissions and committees in the borough praised Roth and asked the council members to support the resolution reappointing her as Allentown’s clerk.
Those who spoke said Roth is “cooperative,” “responsive,” “a responsible and educated person,” “a supporter of small businesses” and “a great asset to our community.” They praised her use of social media for keeping them up to date about news and events in the borough.
Council President Thomas Fritts echoed the residents’ comments and offered his full support to Roth.
Roth, who resides in the borough, said her position “is a responsibility I don’t take lightly.” She thanked the residents who spoke on her behalf and the council members who voted to reappoint her as clerk.
