MATAWAN–The Borough Council adopted an ordinance amending the borough code to create a stop intersection on Robert Street and Harding Boulevard.
Upon the recommendation of the Matawan Borough Police Committee, it is necessary to install traffic control signals, such as stop and/or yield signs for the health, safety and well being of the residents and visitors of the borough to control traffic and to reduce incidents of traffic accidents, according to the council agenda.
The council adopted the ordinance on Sept. 3 during the council meeting at the municipal community center.
Mayor Joseph Altomonte said, “One of the residents was concerned about it and then we sent our police to investigate it. [The police] actually said that there wasn’t any recent accidents, but…could see that it was a funny intersection so [the police] recommended that we put a stop sign on it and that is what we did.”
With the intersection located in a residential area, Altomonte said that the intersection is also located less than a mile away from a school. The closest school near the intersection is Ravine Drive Elementary School.
Stop signs have been installed on Robert Street at the intersection, according to Altomonte.
