Christian Brothers Academy has named Marty Kenney Jr., a 1990 graduate of the Lincroft school, as its coach. The school announced the hiring in a press release distributed to the media on Sept. 20.

Kenney Jr. is the son of Marty Kenney Sr., who coached the CBA baseball team from 1974-2019, winning 832 games, three state titles, eight state sectional crowns and seven Shore Conference championships.

The son played for his father at CBA and coached under him for three separate stints, with the latest coming from 2015-2019. The son helped the father lead the Colts to the 2015 NJSIAA Non-Public A Tournament championship and the 2015 and ’16 Shore Conference Tournament titles.

The second Marty Kenney has enormous cleats to fill, but he wants the job anyway.

“It isn’t possible to express the gratitude and excitement that I feel to be able to build upon the tradition that my father and our alumni worked so hard to develop,” Kenney Jr. said in the press release. “I look forward to growing and enhancing the baseball program in a way that will continue to make our school, baseball alumni, current players, the fans and my father proud.”

Kenney Jr. is plenty qualified in his own right, too. He played Division 3 baseball for DeSales University and then coached at the school from 1998-2005, helping it win seven straight conference titles and reach the 2003 Division 3 College World Series.

“We could not be more excited to build upon the great tradition of CBA Baseball with Marty
Kenney, Jr.,” said Vito Chiaravalloti, CBA’s director of athletics. “Coach Kenney understands the mission of the academy and is committed to developing not only great baseball players, but young men of character and integrity.”
