Membership terms change on Allentown Environmental Commission

ALLENTOWN – Members of the Borough Council have reset the appointments of several current members of the Allentown Environmental Commission.

During a recent meeting, council members passed a resolution resetting the appointments at the request of the commission’s chairwoman. Mayor Greg Westfall makes the appointments to the commission and supports the changes, according to the resolution.

• Michael Michaud was moved from his full membership position with a term expiring Dec. 31, 2019 to the Alternate No. 2 membership position through Dec. 31, 2019;

• Dan Payson was moved from his full membership position with a term expiring Dec. 31,
2021 to the Alternate No. 1 membership position through Dec. 31, 2020;

• Janice Buchalski was moved from her Alternate No. 1 membership position with a term expiring Dec. 31, 2020 to a full membership position through Dec. 31, 2021;

• Bill Cotte was moved from his Alternate No. 2 position with a term expiring Dec. 31, 2019
to a full membership position through Dec. 31, 2019.

According to the municipal website, The commission exists for the protection, development and use of natural resources in Allentown. It accomplishes this by:

• Promoting the conservation and development of the natural resources of Allentown;

• Planning, implementing and informing the public about local conservation programs;

• Conducting research into the possible use of the open areas of Allentown;

• Recommending to the Planning Board plans and programs, for inclusion in a Municipal Master Plan, for the development and use of such open areas;

• Advertising, preparing, printing and distributing books, maps, charts, plans and pamphlets which, in its judgment, it deems necessary for its purposes;

• Managing donated or purchased lands for conservation purposes and operating conservation programs;

• Acting as the coordinating agency of the community on conservation matters and as a liaison between conservation needs and regional, county, state and federal agencies ministering to those needs.

In other business, the council members authorized the Roberts Engineering Group to advertise for bids for Allentown’s recyclable materials and solid waste collection services.

According to a resolution, Borough Engineer Carmela Roberts provided the members of the governing body with updates regarding changing policies worldwide for recyclable and recommended that Allentown continue with its practice of offering single stream collection once every two weeks.

Single stream recycling refers to a system in which recyclable materials such as plastics, paper, metals, glass, etc. are placed in a single bin by consumers. The recyclable materials are collected and transported to a materialsrecovery facility where they are sorted and processed, according to the website www.thebalancesmb.com.
