MARLBORO – All members of the community are invited to attend the 12th annual Marlboro Multicultural Day event to be held from 1-5 p.m. Nov. 24 at Marlboro High School, 95 N. Main St. (Route 79). The event is free to the public.
This year’s multicultural day will have representation from China, Colombia, India, Italy, Japan, Lithuania, Taiwan, Latin America, Poland, Ukraine, Russia and the United States.
Marlboro Multicultural Day committee chairwoman Alice Ng said the event will include performances of Latin dance, ethnic folk dances from India, Lithuania and China, a Polish accordion medley, Italian opera, Chinese martial arts, hip hop dance, and songs and dance from American musicals. The performances will take place from 1-3 p.m.
Following the performances, visitors will be invited to visit a display that represents each nation and to sample ethnic cuisine. There will be craft demonstrations, including origami, Chinese knots and calligraphy. Younger visitors will receive a “passport” which they may have stamped after they visit each “country.” Guests will also be able to sample ethnic food from 3-5 p.m.
“Marlboro Multicultural Day has become an annual event the community and our friends and family members who have attended in the past look forward to,” Ng said. “Local schools, organizations and businesses reach out to us to ask how they can help by providing a performance, food for sampling, or simply to sponsor us with a monetary donation.
“The result of the hard work and dedication of our committee members, volunteers and sponsors is a memorable afternoon of cultural sharing, entertainment, food and fun for all ages and it’s free.
“Most towns have cultural festivals for a particular ethnic group, but ours has a celebration for many ethnic groups all under one roof. That’s what makes our event unique and brings visitors back each year,” Ng said.
