Pezzullo: Police officers will strive to improve quality of life in Marlboro

MARLBORO – Peter Pezzullo, who became chief of the Marlboro Police Department on Aug. 30, has several goals for the officers who are now under his command.

He discussed his goals during a recent interview several months after he succeeded Bruce Hall as the top officer in the department.

“I would like to improve upon our exemplary record of service to the community,” Pezzullo said. “We are currently the 34th safest city in the nation (as ranked by safewise.com) and the ninth safest city in the state (in another ranking). My belief is that there is always room for improvement as we strive to become the standard in the police profession.

“I am challenging my officers to play a more active role in the community outside of the
badge and uniform; for example, through involvement with mentorship programs, outreach
initiatives, and volunteer efforts.

“This is reflected in our current participation in the ‘Growth Through Opportunities’ partnership. Through this program we have the pleasure of hosting an intern from the ARC of Monmouth County in an attempt to better prepare him for future employment.

“We understand we serve as a conduit, partner and resource to realizing the power of
the community for the greater good. Our police department will work diligently to improve the quality of life for our residents, businesses and visitors to create positive change in Marlboro,” Pezzullo said.

Pezzullo has lived in Marlboro for 37 years and is a graduate of Marlboro High School. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University and a master’s degree in criminal justice from Boston University. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1989 to 2001.

Pezzullo joined the Marlboro Police Department in 1997.

“From the day I graduated from the Monmouth County Police Academy, my goal was to achieve the rank of chief,” he said. “Although I believe I have been preparing for this position for several years, the official transition began the day I was promoted to deputy chief (in March).

“At that point, I worked hand-in-hand with Chief Hall. He was a wealth of knowledge and he played an integral role in creating a seamless transition. I am also extremely lucky to be surrounded by a dedicated and hard-working command staff. A successful transition would not be possible without capable and trustworthy command level executives by my side,” Pezzullo said.
