Ms. Chance was born in Pottstown, PA, to Susie Chance and George Mariano. She received her R.N. from Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia, later becoming certified as a psychiatric nurse while working at Carrier Clinic. She developed a course called “The Process of Grief,” and taught Carrier staff, patients, and the community. Her work was written about in the NY Times and mentioned by Dr. Joyce Brothers. She was a member of the NY Browning Society and of Dorothea’s House in Princeton.
She was predeceased by husband Dr. Aristotle J. Vazakas, and is survived by daughter Dr. Susan M. Vazakas, son John G. Vazakas, and son-in-law John M. Crawford, as well as three sisters and several nieces and nephews.
